Design thinking refers to a problem solving approach that focuses on innovative, creative solutions. As a designer, you're working in a highly creative field. Still, in design, or really anywhere for that matter, you're never fully free from restraints and limitations. There are always certain things that seemingly stifle creativity. From client requirements to screen resolutions and certain design and user experience standards, your creative spark seems to constantly be under fire.
But what if it isn't? What if the box, the things limiting you, are actually making you a better designer? Creativity comes from limitation, it's how inventions happen and it's how great design happens. And no matter how much you try to fight it, the box isn't going anywhere, so embracing it is by far the best thing you can do.
Your job is solving problems visually and you do so with the smart application of design thinking and by following the best user experience practices. Your work should never cause more issues than it fixes. And trying to be too unique, special and creative can quickly produce negative results.
In practice, this means that you should stop trying to reinvent the wheel with things such as body typography, menu layouts or icons. If you go crazy with any of these, you're going to run into serious issues - or, rather, your users are going to run into serious issues. Invest that time and energy into places where you can actually design and create something special.
