Generation Z in American politics | DW Documentary
Elections are fast approaching in a polarized United States. Young politicians from opposing sides are campaigning and vying for office. How are they coping with the polarization of society?
Wyatt Gable, a 22-year-old Trump supporter, is running for a seat in the North Carolina legislature as a Republican. Sabrina Bousbar, from Florida, is 27 and is running for a seat in the U.S. Congress as a Democrat. She would then be the youngest member of Congress in Washington. In terms of their ideologies, they represent two worlds apart: Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. Sabrina and Wyatt are worried about the future of their country if the next president elected on November 5th comes from the opposing side.
For both of them, as for many Americans, the divide seems insurmountable. The division also affects youth and student organizations. While the right-wing populist Turning Point USA campaigns for Trump, 17-year-old William He tries to offer a Democratic alternative with the Dream for America movement. Wyatt, Sabrina, and William all fear that this divide will tear society apart and jeopardize the country's cohesion. Where does this antagonism come from? Is there any way to overcome it? Can young people and a new generation of politicians help bridge the gap?
