Based on the VERY well-respected board game Samurai (1998 Hans im Glück), designer Reiner Knizia shrunk the action down into a square-card game in, you guessed it, Samurai: The Card Game (2009 Rio Grande/Abacus). Players play cards to a checkerboard-like grid, trying to surround scoring cards to gain victory tokens of three types. Samurai scoring is special: You have to lead in one type to win, but your score is the number of tokens of OTHER types you have!
A new version moves the action from the abstract to the garden: Pollen (2023 Allplay). This new version is slimmed down in all ways except gameplay.
