How should my diet be after surgery?
After gallbladder surgery, some people may have an increase in bowel movements and these may be liquid in consistency. This is because the body is getting used to working without the gallbladder and it is only temporary, it can be from a couple of weeks to a few months.
Although there is no set diet after gallbladder removal, there are some tips we can follow to help minimize these problems while we can get back to our normal diet.
Moderate your fat intake: Avoid high-fat foods, fried and greasy foods, and fatty sauces for at least 3 weeks after surgery. Instead, choose fat-free or low-fat foods. If we have doubts about whether a food is low in fat, we can rely on Nutrition Facts labels, making sure they have less than 3 grams of fat per serving and that we respect the number of servings we consume.
Increase fiber in your diet: This can help normalize bowel movements. Add soluble fiber, such as oatmeal and barley, to your diet. But be sure to increase the amount of fiber slowly, say over several weeks, because too much fiber at first can make gas and cramps worse. And let's also remember that fruits and vegetables can be an excellent source of fiber.
Eat smaller portions more often: This can ensure better mixing with available bile. A healthy meal should include small amounts of lean protein, such as poultry and fish, along with vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
Once 3 weeks have passed after your surgery, little by little we will go back to our normal diet. Trying a new food that we were avoiding every day. For example, the first day we can try to eat a little egg, if we like it and we have no problems and we can include it in our diet in a normal way and until the next day we try a new food. If, on the other hand, this causes us some discomfort such as gas, colic or diarrhea, then we suspend this food again for 3 weeks and try again. This even included everything that we were avoiding in our normal diet.
You have to remember that each person is different and therefore you always have to keep an individualized control of each case. It is very important that if you have significant diarrhea, or if it is not progressively improving, you inform your surgeon, since he is the one who knows your case best and who can give you the appropriate follow-up.
