In this webinar, our featured guest, Dr. Anthony Von der Muhll discussed how combining exam and treatment of the classical jing-jin ("sinew meridians" or myofascial tracts) of the neck with contemporary orthopedics can enhance outcomes and improve safety for our patients.
He reviewed posture and motion dysfunctions of the neck, and the arthritic progression from strain/sprain to derangement and degeneration. Simple history-taking techniques for neck complaints can help us identify "red flag" symptoms of urgent/serious medical conditions warranting referral to physician care, while differentiating muscles, joint, disc, spinal cord and nerve injuries, as well as neural hypersensitization and psycho-social factors in neck pain.
Physical exam of the neck, including observation, palpation and active range-of-motion can guide treatment of the neck pain and injuries, including when and how to use distant vs. local needling and electroacupuncture, releasing muscle tension through myofascial trigger point needling, and prolo-acupuncture for spinal stabilization and mobilization.
