João Pessoa, located at the easternmost point of the Americas, is the capital of Paraíba, one of Brazil's poorest regions. While its beaches attract numerous tourists, crime rates escalate inland, with over 26 murders per 100,000 residents annually. The province's strategic location makes it a conduit for drug smuggling, contributing to a high incarceration rate.
One notable correctional facility is the Penitenciária de Segurança Máxima Criminalista Geraldo Beltrão, a maximum-security prison in João Pessoa's Mangabeira neighborhood. Built in the 1940s, it houses over 200 high-security inmates, including gang members and murderers. Among them is Lindon, a gang leader who ascended the ranks within the prison but now faces threats from rivals. Conversely, individuals like Chef Junior have renounced gang affiliations by accepting prison jobs, such as kitchen duties, rendering them targets among inmates.
In recent years, Paraíba has emphasized re-socialization efforts. Programs allow prisoners to complete their education, participate in "remission through reading" to shorten sentences, and engage in prison employment. These initiatives aim to build confidence and provide a path to rehabilitation, offering inmates a chance at a new life beyond the bars.
