Dog toe cancer is very common. Toe cancer will cause a dog's toe to get really big and swollen. The toe may even have discharge and cause pain. Some dogs will limp on the foot with cancer and not use the leg very well. Toe cancer can also cause the nail to grow abnormally.
Toe cancer is usually diagnosed with an x-ray and tissue sample. The x-ray will help the veterinarian examine how much of the foot is affected by the cancer and if the bones are damaged too. This can be really helpful when figuring out if the toe needs to be amputated.
A FNA or tissue biopsy sample can be taken to confirm the diagnosis of cancer. An FNA is just a stained sample of cells that allow the veterinarian to look for cancers cells. A biopsy sample can have histopathology completed to diagnose and possibly grade the cancer.
Once cancer is confirmed, amputation will most likely be the treatment of choice by the veterinarian. Always consult with your veterinarian regarding toe amputation in the dog. Dog toe amputation is very common and in some cases cure the dog of cancer. The goal is to remove all the cancer, so the veterinarian will remove as much of the toe as possible to get this result.
