At Jahocheon, the first tributary of the Geumho River, you can encounter mothers who neatly roll up their trouser legs and dive into the water. It is truly heartwarming to see them searching the riverbed, searching for freshwater snails—known in the Gyeongsang dialect as ‘Godi’—which are said to live only in pristine, first-grade water. The scene depicts them plucking thorns from the trifoliate orange tree to extract the flesh of the Godi, just as in the old days, and boiling a delicious Godi soup in a large cauldron. Actor Kim Young-cheol begins a round of joyful memories, accompanied by the fragrant scent of Godi.
▶ Orijangnim, a Forest Praying for the Village's Prosperity and Well-being
Named after the fact that it stretches for 5 ri (2 km) since ancient times, Orijangnim in Jacheon-ri is a magnificent site where over 300 towering trees, with an average age of more than 150 years, create a spectacular sight. Legend has it that this "Sugumagi" forest blocks bad energy from entering the village while preventing good fortune from escaping; a legend also tells that if the leaves are lush, there will be a bountiful harvest that year. Walking along the tranquil village path, I came across a nectarine orchard. Here, the village head and his wife are kind enough to offer a peach even to strangers. The couple, who say they turn their steps toward the only remaining ancestral home in the village rather than their own after finishing their field work, are the 16th-generation descendants of the head family remaining in Hwanggang Village, a settlement of the Gyeongju Kim clan. Although the bustling scene of the elders from childhood can no longer be seen, we listen to the story of a couple who, like a tree firmly rooted, continue to guard their hometown.

At Grandmother Jeong Dong-su’s house, the smoke from a cauldron steaming corn rises affectionately even on hot days. The first thing that catches the eye is the seven wooden walking sticks standing at the entrance. It is said that her grandfather, who passed away the year before last, personally cut and shaped the wood to make these sticks to protect his wife. Along with the "Walking Stick, Item No. 1 on the Asset List," which fills the void left by her grandfather, Grandmother Jeong Dong-su reminisces today about the cherished 60 years of her life.

Even within Yeongcheon, which is famous for its sweltering heat, lies the hottest spot. In Yeongcheon Market, there is a Gomtang (beef bone soup) alley where every house hangs a large cast-iron pot to simmer milky white broth 24 hours a day. Among them is a beef head soup restaurant where three generations—from grandmother to mother and two siblings—have steadfastly carried on the tradition. The secret to this soup, brewed without a single gamey odor, likely lies in the long years spent walking with a single focus.
