Eurus: Pressure-Cuff Actuated Emergency Use Resuscitator System

As a response to the global shortage of ventilators, we created Eurus, an emergency ventilator designed for resilience, adaptability, and patient safety, with on-hand hospital medical supplies and common electronic components. It was designed as a low-cost automation device for manual resuscitators, actuated by a blood-pressure cuff, that provides Automated and Assist/Control emergency ventilation to be easily assembled by hospitals in need.

Eurus is an emergency ventilation system that uses readily available medical aids in combination with an open-source electronics module that hospital doctors can use when there is a shortage of ventilators. It enables controlled and assist/control emergency ventilation to improve the chances of survival of patients at risk from COVID-19. The design automates a manual resuscitation bag (resuscitation bag) that is compressed by a blood pressure cuff activated by the medical air and vacuum connections in each patient room in the hospital.

The air inflates the cuff by squeezing a breathing bag. The vacuum allows the air to quickly escape from the cuff, which inflates the manual ventilation bag again. This mechanism uses two electromechanical valves controlled by four rotary knobs that set the breaths per minute, the approximate tidal volume, the inhalation to exhalation ratio (I: E) and the sensitivity of the inhalation pressure. It has a disposable pressure sensor in the patient's airway that continuously monitors the patient's safety and breathing.
