We caught up with RME's Adrian Lehmann at Musikmesse 2018, who gave us a quick run-through of how an RME audio interface can be used for live recording without a computer.

The setup consists of three synthesizers and a drum machine, with the Fireface UFX II operating as both a recorder and mixer, controlled via the TotalMix iOS App on an iPad.

All RME audio interfaces can be used standalone, but the UFX II and UFX+ interfaces also feature a particularly useful feature in this regard, called DURec. DURec allows for direct recording to a USB thumb drive or external hard drive, enabling the UFX to act as like a traditional hard disk recorder. Alternatively, DURec can also be used for simultaneously making backup recordings, when used in tandem with a recording app such as Cubasis.

The latest update to TotalMix also saw the release of TotalMix Remote, a new app that allows for control of TotalMix (and RME interfaces) over any WiFi network. This means you can now mix from anywhere in your studio or live show, wirelessly with your iPad!
