My original interest in the Socii and the Roman alliance system came from reading "The Rise of Rome" by Anthony Everitt, but the primary source I used for making this video was "A Companion to Roman Italy" which is a compilation of chapters by several different historians and was extremely helpful in understanding the details of early Italian states and how they interacted with the Roman system. It's unironically a pretty fun read.
But my specific main thesis of the video, that the existence of subject states was a practical necessity and that the Romans were sucessful because they didn't only rely on force to coerce, I haven't really seen argued anywhere. I'm not a historian so feel free to point out any glaring issues with it, but I think it fits pretty well with how Rome and other similarly limited states acted.
