The language in the revealed television agreement between the ACC and ESPN shows a possible loophole that could allow Florida State and Clemson to get free from the conference in 2027. A heavily redacted version of the document has been released, but un-redacted portions indicate that the ESPN TV deal essentially runs out in 2027. The ACC’s Grant of Rights claims to lock their schools in until 2036, but a revised or new TV deal nine years sooner could require a new GOR. It would be up to the courts to determine that, but Florida State and Clemson will surely argue that they are no longer bound to a Grant of Rights after 2027. Those schools are currently suing the ACC in an effort to depart from the league.
Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs break down this new wrinkle and wonder if this presents an existential threat to the conference. The guys discuss the scenario of the biggest schools remaining in the ACC, but re-forming the league to cut out the less profitable members.
The ACC media poll has awarded Miami quarterback Cam Ward with Preseason Player of the Year honors. Donno and Gibbs explain why Ward was the most sensible choice. The ACC media poll also revealed the All-Conference preseason team. Miami has the most representatives with five. Did the media snub anyone?
