24 - CA4S - Assigning Textures to Custom Meshes

Now that we have the textures and normal maps we will put them on our armor in Nifskope so we can test them in game. Autodesk 3ds Max will apply a modifier called an NiMaterial property to our object after we export it. The issue here is that Skyrim does not make use of NiMaterial properties and instead uses a different property to assign materials to a game object. Skyrim uses the BSLightingShader property which allows for not only textures to be assigned to the model but also allows for the adjustment of shaders. Before we can apply the BSLightingShader property to our model we will need to remove the NiMaterial property by selecting it and pressing ctrl+delete.
With the NiMaterial property removed we can now add our BSLightingShader property to the model. The easiest method for doing so is to use a preset one from a vanilla armor file. We will copy and paste over the BSLightingShader property from a vanilla armor file over to our custom armor. With the copied BSLightingShader property we will go into the settings and inform the game engine exactly where our custom textures are located. Be sure that after setting the path to the texture you also remove anything before the word textures in the path. Depending on your settings within NifSkope you may always have to take this step if you have not added your Skyrim textures folder from your actual Skyrim installation directory to the render window settings as we had done in a previous video with the extracted textures bsa folder.
