The site was originally home to the J.L. Hudson Department Store, which was once the tallest department store in the world. The store closed in 1983, and the building was imploded in 1998, leaving a vacant lot that became symbolic of Detroit's economic decline.

The skyscraper stands at approximately 685 feet tall, making it the second tallest building in Detroit after the Renaissance Center.

The project is designed by SHoP Architects, a noted New York-based firm, in collaboration with Detroit-based Hamilton Anderson Associates.
