Toyota is also partnering with the Chinese automaker BYD to develop plug-in hybrids. BYD’s upcoming plug-in hybrid Shark utility vehicle, set to launch in Australia, will combine a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering 320 kilowatts of power and 650 newton-meters of torque. This vehicle will offer a total driving range of approximately 845 kilometers, though its towing capacity will be slightly lower at 2500 kilograms.
Looking to the future, Toyota is exploring hydrogen-powered HiLux models in the United Kingdom and plans to launch a fully electric version in Thailand soon. The next-generation HiLux is expected to offer both two- and four-wheel drive options, a variety of body styles, and advanced technology features. Prices are likely to increase, particularly if the HiLux shifts exclusively to hybrid power and moves away from manual transmissions. The new model is anticipated to make its debut at the 2025 Bangkok Motor Show, with deliveries beginning later that year.
