Value Investing Book I recommend: Essays of Warren Buffet http://amzn.to/2ecjT8h
Invest in value and ignore the market fluctuations. Recognize when to buy like crazy when everyone is running for the hills. Does it make sense to invest $1000 when trading fees of $10 will already eat 2% into your return (one for buy and one for sell)?
Diversification is not for idiots because putting all your eggs in one basket is obviously stupid. Perhaps the best thing I've found to do is have no more than 10% (5% better) of your assets in any one class of securities.
Lastly, buy when you know the stock is DIRT cheap. Its like when you you see a vacuum cleaner on sale. First you wonder... why is it so cheap, is there something wrong with it? If the store is closing so you know there's at least some valid reason for it to be so cheap. Same for the market where it tends to seriously overreact all the time. Maybe people are running for the hills once every 5-10 years and you see 5-10% drop everyday in the S&P Nasdaq. When people are running, it's hard to not run too because you may be just as pessimistic. Its really up to your own judgement as an investor to hone your skills in recognizing great value in the investing areas you are interested in.
