The be-all and end-all of speakeasies: Please Don't Tell
In this episode, we finally make it to Please Don't Tell, quite possibly the most well-known of all speakeasies (which is somewhat ironic given the name)!
I heard about Please Don't Tell within my first few months of living in NYC, back when the bar was only a few years old. It would regularly come up when people would list off cool places to check out. But no one seemed to have actually made it there themselves--it was always, "I've also heard of this place hidden in a hot dog shop and through a telephone booth!" But that just added to the allure.
And I have to say that it does live up to the hype. While many new speakeasies have popped up around the city since PDT was opened in 2007, it still offers a near-Goldilocks combination of great cocktails, great service, and an unmistakable theater around finding it and getting in. Often cited as the originator of the modern speakeasy trend, and still one of the best.
