In The Sims 3, Imaginary Friends were added with The Sims 3: Generations in a form of a magical doll. As a separate life state, they start their life in a form of a doll. Interacting with the doll builds their relationship. When the toddler grows up into a child, and they've formed a strong bond with the doll, the doll will transform into a living human-sized ragdoll-like creature with randomized traits. The doll will be attached to you and will follow you everywhere. The Imaginary Friend will grow up with you. So when you grow into a teen, they will grow as well. Finally, when you become an adult, they will become an adult as well. You can offer your Imaginary Friend to become real at any life stage, even as a teen or adult.
Sims 4
In The Sims 4, Imaginary Friends were added with The Sims 4: Adventure Awaits. Imaginary friends come in four types of dolls with certain personality traits. They can only be used by children. Kids can play with them, and also tell them a secret. Doing this will build their relationship. You can change their personality without changing their look. And When the child is lonely, or has reached level 3 of their creativity skill and has good relationship with the doll, they can make their doll turn into an imaginary friend. We have Krafty Kid with Creative Personality, Lil Monster with Goofball Personality, Pretty Pegacorn with Evil Personality, and Wild Child with Competitive Personality and lizard eyes. As long as you don't say a final goodbye, once the child becomes a teen, they'll have the option to make their Imaginary Friend real. The Imaginary Friend will turn into a real teen self.
