In February 2019, the Indian Air Force launched a daring and covert mission called "Operation Bandar." The operation was in response to the tragic Pulwama attack on February 14, where 40 Indian CRPF personnel were killed in a suicide bombing carried out by the terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The attack shook the nation, and India vowed to retaliate.
In the early hours of February 26, 2019, the Indian Air Force executed a precision airstrike on a JeM training camp located in Balakot, deep inside Pakistan. The mission involved a squadron of 12 Mirage 2000 fighter jets, which crossed the Line of Control (LoC) undetected under the cover of darkness. The jets carried out their mission with pinpoint accuracy, dropping Israeli-made SPICE 2000 bombs on the JeM camps to destroy it completely, and killing about 200–350 JeM militants.
The Balakot airstrike was a significant military action as it was the first time since 1971 that Indian fighter jets had crossed into Pakistani airspace. The operation was a message to the world that India would not tolerate terrorism and was prepared to take decisive action to protect its citizens. The target was carefully chosen to avoid civilian casualties, focusing solely on the terrorist camp.
