Increased fuel consumption, black smoke, an unstable idle, reduced power, poor acceleration, difficulty starting, or even failure to start. These are all problems that can result from a faulty MAF sensor.

Oil vapors and carbon deposits enter the intake system through the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. And some dust gets in through an old or damaged air filter. Over time, these contaminants accumulate on the MAF sensor, causing an inaccurate reading of the amount of air entering the engine. This signal reaches the engine control unit (ECU), which then injects more fuel than necessary, causing the error symptoms.
