Seeing videos of someone falling down stairs is hilarious. But each stair fall isn't that funny and it may cost someone's life or serious injuries and many issues.
Hi everyone, and welcome to my channel. Today, we're going to be talking about why Americans die falling from staircases, the causes of these falls, and how we can prevent them.
According to a recent study, Falls are a leading cause of death in the United States, with an average of 39,000 deaths each year. Of those deaths, 12,000 are from falls down stairs. This makes falls down stairs the 18th leading cause of death in the United States.
Falls down stairs also cause an average of 1 million injuries per year, making them the second leading cause of accidental injuries in the entire country.
Now, let's take a closer look at the data. According to Statista, the number of falling deaths in the United States has been on the rise in recent years. In 2017, there were approximately 34,673 falling deaths. By 2018, this number increased to 37,455, and in 2019, it rose to 39,364. In 2020, the year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, there were 41,671 falling deaths. In 2021, the most recent year for which data is available, there were 43,581 falling deaths.
The risk of falling down stairs increases with age. People aged 65 and older account for about 70% of all stair-related deaths. Other factors that increase the risk of falling down stairs include having a disability or chronic health condition, taking certain medications, such as sedatives or antidepressants, alcohol use, impaired vision, poor balance or coordination, and home hazards, such as loose carpeting or uneven steps.
There are a number of things that can be done to prevent falls down stairs. These include making sure stairs are well-lit and free of clutter, installing handrails on both sides of the stairs, using non-slip flooring on stairs, repairing any loose or uneven steps, removing tripping hazards, such as throw rugs or toys, and taking steps to improve balance and coordination, such as tai chi or yoga.
If you have a disability or chronic health condition, talk to your doctor about ways to reduce your risk of falling.
Falls down stairs are a serious problem, but there are things that we can do to prevent them. By making our homes safer and taking steps to improve our balance and coordination, we can help to reduce the risk of falling down stairs and save lives.
