Mom loved to bake up a storm whenever there was a storm at the lighthouse and we as kids loved to gather around and “help” her. Dad noticed that every time she made molasses buns the storms seemed to last longer, thus calling her molasses buns, Storm Buns. Here is her recipe. Hope you like it.
Edie’s Storm Buns or Molasses Buns
1 cup cooking oil
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 cup black strap molasses
1/2 cup of milk (Carnation was her fav)
2 teasp baking soda
5 cup flour
1/2 teasp salt
Preheat oven 375
Prepare baking sheet with parchment paper
Beat the oil, sugar and egg together
Add molasses
Stir in milk and baking soda
Stir in flour and salt and mix well.
Chill dough in freezer for 15 min.
Roll dough out on a floured board to about 1/2 inch thick
Cut into small circles using a juice glass or small circle cookie cutter.
Place close together on the baking sheet.
Bake for 10 -15 min.
If you have too much dough for one sheet of storm buns you can always
freeze the remaining dough for another day.
