Rare trees, like our Tanyosho pine, State Champion trees, like our threadleaf Japanese maple, and old trees, like the American elm planted by the class of 1879, are among the defining features of the Scott Arboretum. These irreplaceable plants mean so much to so many of us.

As the Arboretum’s 95th year comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on our rich history and robust collection. Our Heritage Tree Program, which honors both of these strengths, has been one of my favorite projects at the Scott Arboretum – and one of the most poignant. It was established in 2017 to identify, celebrate, nurture, and protect our most precious trees.

Because of the long histories of Swarthmore College (est. 1864) and the Scott Arboretum (est. 1929), we have identified 157 Heritage Trees on campus… and counting!

I invite you to join me in caring for them with a special Annual Appeal donation. (https://www.scottarboretum.org/support/) Your gift will help nurture and protect these important specimens, now and for years to come.
