Researchers at the Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge have developed a mini-brain in a laboratary, referred to as a 'brain organoid,' that spontaneously connected to a spinal cord and muscles. Scientists Created a Brain In Lab, and It Started Growing. This lentil-sized cluster of human brain cells exhibited tendril-like connections to the spinal cord, allowing it to control muscle tissue taken from a mouse.
The organoid, grown from human stem cells using an innovative method, reached a more advanced stage of development than previous experiments, resembling the human fetal brain at 12-16 weeks of pregnancy. Although far from conscious thought, the scientists aim to use these systems to study neurological development and diseases like motor neuron disease, epilepsy, and schizophrenia.
