RIP Robin Williams (1951-2014). It’s a rare actor who can be just as effective at comedy as he can be at drama, but Robin Williams was one of those men. And that’s why today he’s considered a true icon of his generation, someone who will always be remembered fondly both for the work he left us with, and for the human being he was.
Really, his list of comedy classics could be talked about for days, with some of the most notable performances he ever gave coming in Aladdin, Jumanji, Mrs. Doubtfire, and over in the world of television with Mork & Mindy (1978). That said, arguably even better than these performances were the ones which allowed him to show a more serious side to himself. Those found in the likes of Dead Poets Society, The Fisher King, and Good Will Hunting. In fact, it was for his performance as Dr. Sean McGuire in Good Will Hunting that he won an Academy Award for best actor in a supporting role.
Yes, it’s a true tragedy that as a result of his untimely death in 2014, we no longer have him around to make us laugh or cry depending on what the role called for. And it’s perhaps even sadder that we no longer have him around just to be a positive presence in the world. But what Robin Williams gave us while he was here will always make him a legend in the eyes of society, no matter how much time passes.
