Despite being credited as the godfathers of symphonic metal, very few bands actually sound like Therion. Christofer's love for Celtic Frost and everything occult/mythological has lead the band to very unusual places, from eerie progressive death metal to very atmospheric choir-driven symphonic music with only tangential association with metal, and everything in between. They always run the risk of becoming pretentious, cheesy, or downright boring, but their good stuff is metal at its most immersive and otherworldly
