Sheena Rose 'Island and Monster' Artist Talk with Tamara Best
The Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. in partnership with Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art (MoCADA), Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, and PrintbyPrint Group proudly announced an artistic exploration of contemporary Caribbean culture with artist, Sheena Rose. Born and raised in St. Philip, Barbados, West Indies, Sheena graduated with a BFA degree with Honors at Barbados Community College. In 2016, she received her Masters in Fine Arts at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Fulbright Scholarship. Exploring a variety of mediums including drawn animations, drawings, paintings, performance art, mixed media and new media, Sheena’s works have been exhibited locally throughout the Caribbean and internationally in the Canada, Europe, South America, and the United States.
The weekend of June 2-4th, 2017, Sheena Rose participated in a series of events focused on her performance piece entitled, Island and Monster. First debuted at the Royal Academy in the UK, Island and Monster is a work she “developed in response to (her) conflicted feelings of belonging and displacement, which emerged with her return to the Caribbean after completing an MFA in North Carolina. To reckon with her changing relationship to her home, Sheena becomes both the island and the monster, looking in from outside as a way to negotiate this return.” (The Royal Academy of the Arts, https://www.royalacademy.org.uk)
Events included a formal performance of Island and Monster at MoCADA on Friday, June 2nd from 6-8PM, a student workshop focused on the development of performance art and costumes at Rush Arts Gallery on Saturday, June 3rd from 3-6PM, and an artist talk with Tamara Best, Senior Staff Editor at The New York Times hosted by PrintbyPrint Group at Ode to Babel on Sunday, June 4th from 12-2PM.
