Maya: Simple Extrude using Multi-cut Tool
With this video you will see how to cut a block around an object and then extrude selected faces.
Note: upon selecting the Multi-cut Tool, you must then press and hold the Ctrl + Shift keys to be able to create a loop around the object. when the area is set, hit the Enter key to accept it
