🎧 Top 20 Marvel Hip Hop Variant Swipes! (Volume 2)
Hip hop and Marvel Comics collide once again in Volume 2 of my deep dive into one of the coolest variant cover experiments Marvel has ever produced. 🎤🕷️ In this video, I showcase 20 MORE incredible Marvel Hip-Hop Variant Covers that recreated legendary rap albums using Marvel heroes, villains, and comic book art.
👀 Missed Volume 1? Definitely check that one out too. Even after two videos, we’re still barely scratching the surface. Marvel released over 70 of these hip-hop inspired variants between 2015 and 2017, and some of them are straight-up genius.
This time around I spotlight covers inspired by legendary artists and albums including:

One thing that made this series special is that Marvel didn’t treat hip hop like a gimmick. Former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso — a huge hip-hop fan himself — reportedly pushed this initiative in late 2014 as a genuine celebration of rap culture and comic culture colliding together. And honestly? You can feel the respect in these covers.
The artists didn’t just copy album covers. They recreated the composition, poses, typography, color palettes, and energy of the originals while matching them with the perfect Marvel characters. Some are funny, some are nostalgic, and some are surprisingly clever once you realize how well the comic characters fit the mood of the albums they’re referencing.
For a lot of Black nerds, this crossover felt personal. Many of us grew up loving BOTH hip hop and comics, even when those fandoms were often treated like separate worlds. These variants helped bridge that gap in a fun and creative way.
And collectors definitely noticed. What started as a cool novelty series slowly became a real collector challenge. Some of these books have climbed in value over the years, especially in high-grade condition. Completing the full set today is NOT cheap. 😅 But if you love both comics and rap culture, it’s one of the most unique crossover collections Marvel has ever produced.
