Peloton started in 2012, in a 10 by 10 studio, with really cheap bikes and they tried to lure top-notch
instructors from their jobs. Enticed by the prospect of recording on demand classes, more and more trainers agreed to join the team that has now been dubbed the netflix of fitness.
The hype started when co-founder and CEO John Foley realized the opportunity for an industry of at home fitness. More and more people wanted a high-end workout that was in the comfort of their own home Which sparked an idea. Foley and four others decided to start Peloton which was named after a big group of riders in a race. Even though it seemed like a great opportunity most investors were not convinced. How many people would want to pay 2,000$ for a bike, 250$ for delivery and a 40$ per month subscription? Apparently, a lot of people.
With the first round of private support Peloton was still struggling to raise money, so they started a kickstarter campaign and raised over 300,000$ and a ton of social media attention all within a month.
The following year, they recieved 10.5M$ in funding in order to get bikes to consumers all the while, they were in Manhattan recording classes in their studio. In 2016 Peloton started their subscription model Which had over a 1,000 on demand and live classes that you could use with or without a Peloton bike. and this helped them show about 60M$ in revenue.
The secret to Peloton's success is that they can control every aspect of your workout and with a cult-like following on social media and for their instructors it has been a huge success. And the social features of letting users compare their data and having a competitive environment only makes them even more successful. And as of 2019, Peloton has sold more than 400,00 Peloton bikes, and are now beginning to sell smart treadmills. and 70 brick and mortar locations in the US, UK and Canada offer Peloton Classes.
They have grown to 7.3% market share in the gym industry surpassing SoulCycle at 4%. Peloton's latest evaluation was at 4.15 Billion dollars. and they're offering more classes such as Yoga Running and even Bootcamps.
