🕰️ How to Adjust Grandfather Clock Chime Hammers

If your grandfather clock chimes sound weak, muffled, uneven, or out of tune, the chime hammers may need adjustment.

In this short video, you'll see how to adjust the chime and strike hammers on a grandfather clock so they properly contact the chime rods. Correct hammer positioning is important for producing a clear, pleasant chime sound.

Common symptoms of hammer adjustment problems include:

✅ Weak or soft chimes
✅ Buzzing sounds after the hammer strikes
✅ One note louder or quieter than the others
✅ Chimes that sound muffled or distorted
✅ Hammers touching the rods when at rest

Most grandfather clock hammers are designed to be adjusted carefully from side-to-side and front-to-back to achieve proper clearance and sound quality.

This example uses a Howard Miller grandfather clock, but the same principles apply to many modern grandfather clocks, including Howard Miller, Ridgeway, Sligh, and other tubular bell or chime rod clocks.
