1. Massive Production and Disposal:
Massive Production and Disposal: More than 300 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide every year, and about 50% of this is single-use plastic. Sadly, only 9% of all plastic waste ever produced has been recycled, while the rest ends up in landfills, incinerators or in the environment.
2. Ocean Pollution:
Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic enter the ocean, harming marine life. It is estimated that if current trends continue, by 2050 there could be more plastic (by weight) in the ocean than fish. Microplastics have been found in almost every marine species, including creatures that are consumed by humans.
3. Long Decomposition Time:
Plastic can take hundreds to thousands of years to decompose. For example, a plastic bottle can take up to 450 years to decompose, and even then, it doesn't completely disappear - it just turns into microplastics that remain in the environment.
