Hungry Kids in Ontario
Kids who are fed are kids who can focus and learn in my classroom.
As expected, Doug Ford is dragging his heels on signing onto the National School Food program.
And in the meantime, I just found out that Ontario is investing only TEN cents per day to feed kids in public schools. Ten Cents! With current grocery prices the way they are, that only allows us to buy one tiny slice of an apple per child, to last them for the whole day.
That is the second lowest amount for all provinces and territories in Canada, and it is shameful.
This is why I’m constantly begging strangers on social media to donate bananas, apples, cheese strings, and granola bars to keep my hungry students fed at school.
THIS is why I’m spending my weekends driving around to pick up food donations to feed my students.
This is why I was at the grocery store this weekend, once again spending my own money, to buy food for my starving students who show up to school without having eaten breakfast, and without enough food in their lunch bags to make it through the day.
Food4Kids and Nutrition For Learning simply can’t keep up with the needs in our schools. These programs were never meant to be the sole source of nutrition for our students.
Ontario deserves a government that will ensure that none of my students ever has to go hungry.
