Today we will discuss one of the bloodiest battles of the Great Patriotic War – the Battle of Rzhev, which lasted intermittently from January 1942 to March 1943. Specifically, we will discuss the Red Army's offensive in August-September 1942. Speaking about the results and lessons of this battle for Rzhev, military historian Alexei Isaev notes: "... The objective result of the operation was the disruption of the German command's plan to conduct Operation Smerch." And further: "...The offensive of the Kalinin and Western Fronts was one of the first attempts to prepare for a deep offensive operation." Today, Alexey Isaev is in our studio with his colleague, Artem Drabkin. We'll learn about the operation the German command was preparing under the codename "Smerch," and what key elements could be found in the Soviet Rzhev offensive, elements that became constant in all major Red Army operations throughout the war.
