Everyone knows the story of Salvatore "Totò" Schillaci, who came from fiery Sicily to wear the Juventus jersey and, more importantly, to make all Italians dream during the summer of the 1990 World Cup. Another Schillaci, however, had arrived at the Olimpico four years before these events: but for the man who, despite everything, was considered the true phenomenon of the family, the magical nights were truly few. This is the story of Maurizio Schillaci, the shadow of the champion.

“My best seasons were with Zeman,” he said. “I scored goals over and over again. Then Lazio came along. It was my golden age. I lived in luxury, changed cars 38 times, played in the stadium of my dreams, the Olimpico. I had a four-year contract worth €500 million. Then something went wrong. The first injuries, the setbacks. Then I discovered why. I played only a few games and stopped. They called me the 'imaginary invalid' or the 'mystery footballer' because I was always in the infirmary. In reality, I had a torn tendon.”

Schillaci dropped off the football radar, overcame his drug addiction problems, but found himself sleeping in empty carriages at the Palermo station. A few years ago, he said he found himself homeless. “My decline was very rapid, and now I find myself on the streets. I can't find work, I sleep on trains stopped at the station. There are other people with me, we are a group.” of 20 homeless people.
