Arduino Basics: Digital to Analog Conversion

One of the biggest downfalls of the Arduino is that it lacks any digital to analog conversion(DAC)capabilities. Eventually you are going to want this feature, after all we live in an analog world.

The good news is that it's very easy to make a basic DAC called a R2R ladder. The R2R stands for Resistor2Resistor. The best part is that no matter how many bits(stages) your DAC contains you only need 2 values of resistors: R and 2R. So 1k and 2K or 30K and 60K or even 150R and 300R. All that matters is the ratio of 1:2.
In this video we use 22K and 47K. While not quite 1:2, with the tolerance of the resistors being low, it works quite well.
