On January 9, 2020, a boy died in the Moscow region. An ambulance responded to the call, and police officers found three more babies and their nanny. These children were born to surrogate mothers for Filipino citizens who were unable to enter Russia due to closed borders. The Investigative Committee then opened a case of child trafficking. This sparked a wave of public debate: can surrogacy be called child trafficking? Is it permissible to have children for foreigners? What if gay men take our children? Or should surrogacy be banned altogether?
I decided to talk to surrogate mothers, biological parents, doctors, and lawyers to dispel some of the myths surrounding this topic and understand what surrogacy actually is.
