Shri Jagannath is considered an avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. He has the attributes of all the avatars of Lord Vishnu.
Lord Jagannatha, as His very name signifies, is the Lord of the Universe (Jagat = Universe; Natha = Lord). He is also popularly known as Mahaprabhu (Maha = Great; Prabhu = Lord).
Lord Jagannath is another name for Lord Krishna.
Lord Jagannath, who is considered to be the incarnation of Lord Krishna, along with his elder brother Balram and his sister Subhadra, goes out to ride a chariot in the city of Puri in Orissa every year and this journey is known as Rath Yatra all over the world. The virtue of participating in Jagannathji's Rath Yatra is considered equal to a hundred yagyas.
Participating in Ratha Yatra and pulling the chariots by the ropes is considered a virtuous act.
By doing so, devotees purify their bad karma, fulfill their desires and attain happiness and prosperity.
During Ratha Yatra, devotees get the opportunity to have darshan of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra (also considered to be Lord Shiva) and Devi Subhadra (manifestation of Shri Durga.)
The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath holds immense significance for devotees, who follow it with great devotion and emotion.
Participating in this journey ends all the problems of life. Along with this, auspiciousness comes in life.
