Here is an outline of the 2 methods used to create bulleted and numbered and lists in Adobe InDesign:
Bullets and Numbering Paragraph Styles option:
1. Create a New Paragraph Style (Window, Styles, Paragraph Styles, cmd + F11 on Mac) from the fly out menu in the Paragraph Styles panel
2. Select the text to which you would like to apply the list style and select the style name in the Paragraph Styles panel
3. Edit the newly created paragraph style by double-clicking on the style name and navigate to Bullets and Numbering in Paragraph Style Options
4. Select list format and position values: Left Indent / Tab Position: 0.125 in (9pt), First Line Indent: -0.125 in (9pt), settings used in this lesson
5. Select OK
Manual option using Indents and Spacing / Tabs Paragraph Styles option:
1. Create a New Paragraph Style (Window, Styles, Paragraph Styles, cmd + F11 on Mac) from the fly out menu in the Paragraph Styles panel
2. Select the text to which you would like to apply the list style and select the style name in the Paragraph Styles panel
3. Edit the newly created paragraph style by double-clicking on the style name and navigate to Indents and Spacing in Paragraph Style Options
4. Select indent position values: Left Indent: 0.125 in (9pt), First Line Indent: -0.125 in (9pt), settings used in this lesson
5. Navigate to Tabs in Paragraph Style Options
6. Select Tab position value (if needed), Left-Justified Tab type is commonly used
7. Select OK
Note: tab position is important when your lists have a wide margin, and/or your lists have 2 digits. In the case of 2 digits, you may want to use a Right-Justified Tab to right align the digits.
Note 2: Opt + 8 key command to create a bullet on Mac.
Best practice tip: plan ahead if your lists require 2 digit numbering.
