Sigmund Freud was born ... Sigismund on 6 May 1856..
In 1873, Freud began to study medicine at the University of Vienna.
He collaborated with Josef Breuer in treating hysteria by the recall of painful experiences under hypnosis. In 1886 Freud set up in private practice, specialising in nervous and brain disorders. The same year he married Martha Bernays, with whom he had six children.
Freud developed the theory that humans have an unconscious, in which impulses are in perpetual conflict for supremacy with the defences against them.
Freud discovered you could go back in time to the traumatic memory that had apparently been forgotten and heal it.
In 1923, he published 'The Ego and the Id', which suggested a new structural model of the mind, divided into the 'id, the 'ego' and the 'superego'.
He then began to develop a system called psychoanalysis. However, due to difficulty in hypnotizing some patients (this may have been due to a lisp) Freud abandoned hypnosis in favour for his psychoanalysis. This set back the development of hypnosis and its practices.
Freud, died of cancer on 23 September 1939.
