🐫Mongolia : Silver 50 Tögrög 1976, Bactrian Camel - Conservation World Nature Fund.
Today we’re having a look at, hopefully I pronounce it right : a 50 Tugrik silver coin from Mongolia. Tugrik or Tögrög linguistically is linked to circles and a full moon, and therefore coins were named as such.

Mongolia lies between Russia and China and is notorious for the history of the Mongol Empire under most notably Djenghis Khan, which boundaries stretched from China all the way to Europe.
The Mongol Empire in the 13th century is said to have been the biggest Empire in our current history, or maybe it’s confused with a possible lost Tartarian Empire.
When people think of Mongolia they’ll usually think about nomads living in their yurt tents, drinking horse milk, wrestling and practicing their archery skills.
All though there all still many nomads living on rural pastures, over half of the population lives in the cities, where over 42% of the population lives in the capital Ulaanbataar alone.
This figure will increase with more and more people leaving the country side and hoping to earn some money in the large cities, thereby giving up Mongolian traditions like horse racing.
The 50 Tugrik shown in this video has a weight of 35 grams / 1.1253 ozt with a Fine Silver percentage of 0.925. That gives us an actual silver content of 32.375 grams / 1.0409 ozt, and is thus in terms of silver comparable to a generic silver 1 oz bullion coin.
So with todays spot price the melt value is around the $25 - $26 (25 October 2020). The value of this coin lies in the range of the $30 - $45 depending on condition and seller, since I’ve also seen them being offered for $60.
Another fascinating part of Mongolian history are the Tarim mummies. These mummies are from the Indo European branch, but most intruigingly is that they have Caucasian features.
In the area towards Afghistan and such today still blond, blue eyed people can be found, but it’s super interesting that in ancient times these people had a thriving culture in Mongolia.
In respect to ancient history I did a quickscan and this is what I found after not so long panning around. This is the Oyu Tolgoi Gold / Copper mine, with as by products silver and molybdenum.
The expected annual copper production is 430.000 tons, and 12 kg of gold is judged to be mine annually out of the pit.
And these lines and circles that I’ve drawn out for you are the remnants of a long past civilization. This infrastructure stretches all the over Asia, and mainly near large rivers.
The scale of it is perplexing and b.t.w. :
This infrastructure can be found in the remote area’s of Canada, The United States, South America, Africa, Australia, Europe….
I’ve only looked at it for maybe half an hour, but if I do my best I can trace it all back into Russia where there’s hundreds of miles of just the same ancient infrastructure. It’s truly amazing when you think about the massive engineering scale of it all.
On the obverse we have the Coat of Arms depicting the famed Mongolian Rider, with in text saying : The Mongolian People’s Republic.
The reverse shows a Bactrian camel, and the reason for this isn’t only being a dessert animal, and therefor attributed to convoys and herds in the Mongolian area.
But also because of a global World Nature Fund campaign, which was carried out in the 70’s in respect to conservation of indigenous animals of ones country.
You may have seen my video about the Indonesian 2000 Rupiah coin from 1974, which had the officially extinct declared Javan tiger on it.
This 50 Tugrik from 1976 comes in a regular and proof version, the coin in the video concerns the regular variant, which has a minted quantity of 5.328 pieces.
