Hematuria is a medical term that describes the presence of blood in the urine. When blood is present in the urine, it can give the urine a pink, red, or brown color, depending on the amount of blood present and its origin in the urinary system. This condition can be caused by a number of factors, ranging from benign conditions to more serious health problems.

Causes of hematuria can include urinary tract infections, kidney stones, kidney trauma, kidney inflammation (glomerulonephritis), bladder inflammation (cystitis), kidney diseases such as IgA nephropathy or lupus nephritis, as well as more serious conditions such as kidney, bladder, or prostate cancer. In some cases, hematuria may be asymptomatic and only detected in routine urine tests, while in other cases, it may be accompanied by abdominal pain, painful urination, fever, and other symptoms, depending on the underlying cause.

Diagnosis of hematuria typically involves a thorough medical evaluation, including medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests such as urinalysis, imaging studies like ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI, and, in some cases, more invasive procedures such as cystoscopy to examine the bladder and urinary tract.

Treatment for hematuria depends on the underlying cause. In some cases, it may be necessary to treat infection, remove kidney stones, manage underlying medical conditions, or perform surgery to remove tumors. It is crucial that any case of hematuria be evaluated by a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate cause and treatment, as in some cases, hematuria can be a sign of serious conditions requiring immediate medical intervention.
