“Monks, a donkey that follows a herd of cows, even though it cries out, ‘I am a cow! I am a cow!’, its voice is not the voice of a cow, its feet are not the feet of a cow. It only follows the herd and cries out, ‘I am a cow! I am a cow!’ Likewise, monks, even though they follow behind other monks and proclaim, ‘I am a monk! I am a monk!’, their moral conduct is not like that of the other monks, their mental training is not like that of the other monks, their wisdom training is not like that of the other monks. That monk only follows behind other monks, proclaiming, ‘I am a monk! I am a monk!’ He is not a true monk.
Monks, you should reflect and study in this way: Your conduct in moral conduct, mental training, and wisdom training must always be rigorous.” They should study and reflect in this way.”
The above passage is excerpted from the Kattarabha Sutta (The Sutta on the Donkey).
