Planting Green Firebreaks with Malama Learning Center
Through engagement and education and multiple partnerships, Malama Learning Center is forging the path to bring life-giving native plants back to the Palehua area on Oahu. Hawaiian Electric applauds Malama Learning Center’s restoration efforts and supports their mission of perpetuating conservation, culture and sustainability.
Our employees volunteered to help Malama Learning Center replace trees that were previously impacted by fires at their Palehua site located in the southern Waianae Mountains on Oahu. By slowly introducing native plants, this forest can serve as a green fire break to slow down the burn of potential fires. It also helps to prevent invasive grasses from taking over the area.
