With most things, the more you pay the more you get. WP Engine is an amazing choice for most who can afford to spend the extra buck, but if your on a tight budget or not expecting a lot of traffic and just want the online presence then something like Hostgator would be appropriate.
Now don't get me wrong, Hostgator is great and I have been using their reseller plan for a few years now and only had a problem once for like 3 hours.. in years that's actually really great! And as long as you optimize your site properly with a caching plugin and some performance tweaks, running your site on Hostgator will still provide you very good performance.
Where WP Engine stands out is in a few ways:
