"No one can serve two masters," said Jesus. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. And I ask: Where is your treasure?
Treasure is anything we desire more than anything else; it's the priority and reason for living. Every person has or is searching for some kind of treasure. It could be money, family, a relationship. How do you know if it's a treasure? If you feel you can't live without it, or that you'll only be truly happy if you achieve it, then it's your treasure.
It could be something as mundane as losing weight and improving your appearance. Have you heard of people who died trying? People are capable of anything for an aesthetic treasure. Have you heard of someone who killed or died for a loved one? That relationship was the treasure, the master of that person's life.
Evaluate your treasures in the long term, and you will understand what Jesus meant. In a hundred years, everyone you know today will be dead. At best, if you've been someone prominent, they'll put up a bust of you in some square so your head can become a pigeon's latrine.
When Jesus used the expression "serving two masters," he was talking about the slave-master relationship, and I don't even need to tell you how easy it is to become slaves to money, career, and success. All these things can be good and lawful, but God doesn't want them to be the center and reason for our lives. God claims that place.
The difference is that when He occupies that place, we are no longer slaves, but children. All other things are achieved through effort. You get God when you rest, when you surrender, when you put one of those signs on your life: "Under new management."
Only in God do you find rest, because He did all the work. Only in God do you find fullness, because... well, because He is God! But which God am I talking about? From the only one, from your creator, from the one who doesn't expect you to do anything to save yourself, but who provided everything so that you could call him Father. The God who sent his Son into the world to die for your salvation and rise again for your justification.
Didn't I say that someone is even capable of dying for a treasure? For what treasure do you think Jesus left heaven to come to this world to die? You. And you, what is your treasure?
