Breaking Free: Why I Quit Traditional Social Work / When I embarked on my social work journey, I had high hopes of making a difference in the lives of others, inspired by the experiences I had with social workers. However, reality hit hard as I discovered the harsh truth of the profession. Contrary to my expectations, the job brought about challenges that pushed me to reassess my path.
In this candid video, I share my personal story of the disillusionment I faced as a social worker. I was passionate about helping vulnerable populations, but the toll it took on my own well-being became unbearable. Despite the narrative of social work as a noble calling, I realized that preserving my mental and emotional health was equally important.
I'll shed light on the unspoken aspects of the job, including the impact of vicarious trauma, low pay, and demanding hours. I wrestled with the conflict between wanting to support others and avoiding becoming vulnerable myself.
Ultimately, I made the brave decision to step away from traditional social work and explore alternative ways to utilize my social work skills.
