Michelle grew up in Connecticut with her parents and sister. She had a happy childhood with a family that supported her in everything that she did. She went to school out of town but had friends from both her school and from her hometown. She was active in multiple extra-curricular activities, especially if it involved music, singing, dancing, or acting. During her college years, she was raped by someone with whom she had a relationship. After a long journey to remember the rape, the best method she found to heal through the trauma was to talk about it, allow the memories to surface, and acknowledge and accept what happened. This began with talking about it with a few close friends and then speaking to a trusted RD at her college who specialized in sexual assault. She also utilized resources at her local YWCA. Over time, she told her immediate family. After years of seeing a social worker and accepting the fact that she was a survivor rather than a victim, she decided to join The RAINN Speakers Bureau, in an effort to help others by sharing her story. Now that she has spoken out, Michelle feels a sense of freedom and inspiration, with a new goal in her life- to empower others who are survivors of sexual assault and help them find their path to healing, whatever that path may be.
