Paul Kiefer is first of all a renowned quantum gravity and cosmology specialist probably best-known to the scientific community as an author of the textbook entitled “Quantum Gravity” first edited in 2005, and a series of papers about classical and quantum cosmology, the problem of time in cosmology, the theory of black holes and the foundations of quantum theory.
He is also an author of the popular book entitled "Quantum Cosmos" also published among other languages in Polish.
Prof. Kiefer studied physics and astronomy at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Vienna. He defended his PhD in Heidelberg University in 1988 under the supervision of prof. Dieter Zeh on the concept of time in quantum gravity. He then became a postdoc in Heidelberg (1988/89) and later at the University of Zurich (1989-93), finally getting a position of a lecturer at the University of Freiburg (1993-2001). In 2001 he got a professorship in theoretical physics at the University of Cologne where he had stayed till now.
Meantime he was a visiting professor at the University of Tours (1996) and at the University of Montpellier (2004), University of Cambridge, and the MPI Albert Einstein Institute for Gravitational Physics in Potsdam. He visited many places and attended vast number of conferencesgiving talks and seminars on quantum gravity and cosmology.
Prof. Kiefer has written more than 150 papers which are cited about 4500 times and get Hirsch index h=38 which means that 38 of his papers are cited more that 38 times.
Black holes and related objects in the universe are one of the most fascinating topics that brings together many threads that are considered crucial to the creation of the theory of quantum gravity - currently the most sought-after theory in physics. The debate will aim to convey this fascination with the topic among scientists to young people and the public - also to outline the future practical application of this type of research, e.g. in quantum cryptography.
