ST FRANCIS BAY BEACH RESTORATION | THE STORY BEHIND THE GROYNES & SAND NOURISHMENT

Why are the new groynes being built in St Francis Bay, and what will our beaches look like in 5–10 years?

In this video, I speak to Wayne Furphy, Chairman of the St Francis Property Owners Non-Profit Company and the St Francis Association, about the massive beach restoration project underway in St Francis Bay, Eastern Cape.

St Francis is a seaside town — and without its beaches, it simply cannot remain the destination that locals and holidaymakers have come to love.

Wayne explains how the St Francis Bay groyne project is designed to slow the movement of sand along the coastline, helping retain sand on our beaches. We also look at the sand nourishment and dredging operation, which is moving thousands of cubic metres of sand from the Kromme River and river mouth back onto the beaches.

The project has already faced a serious test, with recent major storms causing damage to parts of Groyne 5. But with Groynes 5 and 6 completed and construction continuing, the long-term vision is becoming clearer.

The goal? Healthy, wider beaches, improved surfing, swimming and recreational opportunities, increased marine life around the groynes, and ultimately a world-class seaside destination.
Wayne also explains why only four groynes are currently planned, how the project is funded, and what St Francis Bay could look like by 2030 and beyond.

This is a fascinating look at one of the biggest coastal restoration projects ever undertaken in St Francis Bay.

Thanks for watching and being part of this community. Brad
